What's wild about being a photographer for 20 years...
You start to speak a second language. The language of light.
You begin to see it — how it moves, how it bounces, how it can turn something ordinary into something breathtaking. Light is magic.
Have you ever had a moment during a power outage, when the candles were lit and suddenly everything felt softer, quieter... sacred?
That’s the power of changing just one sense. It dials you in. Heightens everything else.
Last week, I had one of those moments. I was in the hot tub with my two littles — the end of an ordinary day, nothing fancy — when the sunset light bounced off the side of our white house and hit their faces.
The color vibrancy doubled. Sadie’s freckles glowed like tiny copper stars. And I swear, I lost my breath.
It was like time stopped. And in that instant, I remembered: I'm sitting in the miracle I prayed for 15 years ago.
I almost missed it. Because ordinary is so easy to rush through. But extraordinary lives inside the ordinary — if we’re willing to dial in.
So this week, here are 3 simple ways to savor what’s already around you:
✔️ 1. Use your senses like a camera lens. Next time you're eating dinner, walking the dog, or folding laundry — ask yourself: What do I see, hear, feel, smell? This grounds you. And suddenly, even lavender dryer sheets become something sacred.
✔️ 2. Say it out loud. Noticing something beautiful? Whisper it. Say it to your kid, your partner, your journal, your dog. Naming it cements it.
✔️ 3. Anchor the moment. Choose a small physical gesture (a deep breath, a hand over your heart, a blink-and-smile) to say: This. I want to remember this. Your body will start to recognize magic when it happens again.
Ordinary life is full of light. And it’s waiting to be noticed.
Here’s to seeing it.
