Confession time: I’m wildly motivated by location. I have these little altar egos that seem to take over depending on the space I’m in. Walk into the gym? Suddenly, Gym Katie shows up, ready to crush a workout. Step into a coffee shop? Writer Katie is furiously typing away like she’s got a novel due at midnight. At my desk? Business Strategist Katie takes over—she’s sharp, focused, and probably judging your font choices.
But here’s the kicker: these “spaces” fuel different parts of me, and that’s why I choose them intentionally. If you’re asking for marketing advice right now? Sorry, Design Katie isn’t here—she clocked out when I walked into the gym.
If you’re like me and your environment impacts your motivation, this week’s habit value pairing is for you: At-Home vs. Away-from-Home.
Are you a habit-homebody? Or do you need to be IN THE WILD to stay motivated? Let’s break it down:
The Habit Value Spectrum
At-Home: Prefers the comfort and accessibility of doing habits in their own space. Motivated by familiarity and ease.
Away-from-Home: Feels energized and focused by practicing habits in external spaces like a gym, café, or park.
Middle: Balances both—enjoying habits in a go-to home setup but switching to external spaces for variety or inspiration. (or vice versa)
Tips to Make It Work for You
If You’re an At-Home Person:
Create a dedicated habit zone, like a cozy reading chair, a yoga mat in the corner, or a clutter-free desk for journaling.
Keep it inviting—think candles, plants, or good lighting—and remove distractions.
If You’re an Away-from-Home Person:
Find your “habit sanctuary” outside the house. Maybe it’s a park for walking, a café for writing, or a gym for working out.
Commit to showing up consistently—it’s easier to build habits in a familiar external space.
If You’re in the Middle:
Maybe your default is away, but you build in a "back-up plan". Example: "I always walk outside, but if the weather drops below 20 degrees, I’m doing my at-home 15-minute workout instead. Because cold." (You can read about my hate-hate relationship with the cold here. It’s like a love-hate relationship, except there’s no love.)
Reflection Question:
