☀️ flexibilty vs structure? (Habit Values Part 2)

“How dare you kids interrupt my morning routine…I’m trying to get centered.... so I can be a good mom…oh…right.”

The countdown to the Habit Lab is on (29 days, actually), and today I want to share the second habit value pair we’ll explore inside the Lab:

Flexibility vs. Structure

Structure is about showing up even when it’s hard. It’s the framework that keeps you grounded and consistent, even on tough days. Structure builds trust in yourself, which is the cornerstone of confidence.

Flexibility is the counterbalance. It’s knowing when to adapt so your habits can survive life’s curveballs. Habits that can pivot are the ones that last.

When I decided to start waking up at 5 a.m., I quickly fell in love with claiming those precious quiet hours. I’d light a candle, sip my coffee, journal, and feel like I finally had life figured out.

And then…my kids caught on.

I don’t know if they thought I’d unlocked the secrets of the universe or just smelled the coffee, but one by one, they started waking up earlier too. Suddenly, my sacred morning routine turned into a before-sunrise party.

At first, I was thrown. But I realized I needed a backup plan. My structure got me started, but flexibility had to keep me going.

Now, my mornings vary.

Some days, I bask in the full 90-minute routine before anyone stirs. Other days, I embrace the 15-minute version. It’s not what I imagined, but it works, and my habits are still intact.

The Takeaway:

  • If you lean toward Structure, ask yourself: Am I being so rigid that I can’t adapt when life happens? Where can I give myself permission to pivot?
  • If you lean toward Flexibility, ask yourself: Am I giving myself so much grace that I’m not following through? Where can I tighten up my habits?
