☀️ Independence or Accountability (Habit Values Part 6)

“Don’t tell me what to do!!! Wait, but also tell me exactly what to do please…”

When it comes to building habits, do you thrive on independence or accountability?

Here’s the breakdown:

Independence means you prefer to go solo. You set your own goals, track progress on your own, and rely on your internal motivation to get things done. Whether it’s hitting the gym or decluttering your space, you like to work at your own pace.

Accountability is the opposite—you perform better with support. A workout buddy, group challenge, or community cheering you on makes all the difference, giving you that extra push to keep going.

And then there’s the middle ground—the sweet spot where you make consistent progress independently but tap into accountability for renewed motivation and consistency.

Tips for Finding Your Balance:

  • Team Independence: Stick to personal goals and create a routine that works for you, like following your own gym plan or creating a solo decluttering checklist.
  • Team Accountability: Join a group fitness class, sign up for a group challenge, or partner with friends who share your goals.
  • Middle Ground (The Habit Lab Way): Surround yourself with positive like-minded people or schedule check-ins with a coach, but feel the freedom to work independently on your own.

According to
this article, “Individuals have the following probabilities of completing a goal by taking these actions:

  • Having an idea or goal: 10% likely to complete the goal
  • Consciously deciding that you will do it: 25%
  • Deciding when you will do it: 40%
  • Planning how to do it: 50%
  • Committing to someone that you will do it: 65%
  • Having a specific accountability appointment with someone you’ve committed to: 95%”

Which habit style fits you best—independence, accountability, or a mix of both?

Current Growth Goal:

Just got back from a 7-day cruise of NOT normal routine. Even though it was full of treats, I found myself genuinely excited to return to my baseline way of eating, moving, and sleeping. My husband and I kept saying to each other "I feel fluffy." 😆

Once you find the systems that "feel like home", vacations ending don't feel so sad! This week is all about my "reset ritual": Protein, colorful veggies, early to bed, tons of water, back to weights. (Back to home!)

Up Next:

I'm spending today and tomorrow finishing the tech (and praying all the tech works!!!) for Wednesday's big grand opening of The Habit Lab. My dream is going to be REAL in two days! Send all the positive vibes! I'm so happy. I can see the vision! I believe!!!

When accountability is present, people keep their eyes on a very clear prize. They know what they are working toward and how they are going to get there.

After hitting rock bottom, I've embarked on a radical journey. For one year, I'm taking a break from all cynicsm and trying out some crazy self-improvement experiments (so you don't have to.)
