☀️ the closet cleanout that made me cry (in a good way)

One year ago, during my radical year of self-improvement, I cleaned out my closet.

I pulled every ill-fitting, not-quite-me item I owned, tossed them in bags, tossed them into the basement, and said:
“I’ll deal with that in a year.”

Well. That year ended last week. And since this month in The Habit Lab is all about decluttering, I challenged myself to actually finish the job.

But what I didn’t expect?
Dealing with those bags meant dealing with something deeper.

I call her Purgatory Katie.

The version of me who used to keep clothes that didn’t quite fit — literally or emotionally.

The version who told herself she might yo-yo, so she’d better keep those bigger sizes.

The one who bought loud patterns trying to be “fun,” when really, all she wanted was a cozy neutral and a pair of jeans that fit.

This time, I didn’t store her. I released her.

I cried a little. I thanked her. I donated the clothes.

And in doing that, I didn’t just make space in my closet —

I made space in my life.

For new clothes that feel like me.

For a version of me who trusts her future.

For new opportunities, new energy, new confidence.

If you're ready to let go of your own version of "Purgatory You", here are 3 questions to ask when you're purging old clothes:

  1. Would I buy this today?
  2. Do I feel confident in this version of me?
  3. Am I keeping this out of fear — or because I actually love it?

You’re not just decluttering your closet.

You’re decluttering your identity.

One hanger at a time.

I was interviewed by Erin Cuccio (who has THE pro DJ radio voice for real) about why willpower does NOT work and gentle curiosity is the key to lasting change.

Current Growth Goal:

This spring is all about releasing anything that's no longer in alignment: clothes, extra meetings, even "goals" that made sense at the time that no longer make sense.

After hitting rock bottom, I've embarked on a radical journey. For one year, I'm taking a break from all cynicsm and trying out some crazy self-improvement experiments (so you don't have to.)
