“I’ll deal with that in a year.”
\nWell. That year ended last week. And since this month in The Habit Lab is all about decluttering, I challenged myself to actually finish the job.
\nBut what I didn’t expect?
Dealing with those bags meant dealing with something deeper.
I call her Purgatory Katie.
The version of me who used to keep clothes that didn’t quite fit — literally or emotionally.
The version who told herself she might yo-yo, so she’d better keep those bigger sizes.
The one who bought loud patterns trying to be “fun,” when really, all she wanted was a cozy neutral and a pair of jeans that fit.
This time, I didn’t store her. I released her.
\nI cried a little. I thanked her. I donated the clothes.
\nAnd in doing that, I didn’t just make space in my closet —
I made space in my life.
For new clothes that feel like me.
For a version of me who trusts her future.
For new opportunities, new energy, new confidence.
If you're ready to let go of your own version of \"Purgatory You\", here are 3 questions to ask when you're purging old clothes:
\nYou’re not just decluttering your closet.
You’re decluttering your identity.
One hanger at a time.

After hitting rock bottom, I've embarked on a radical journey. For one year, I'm taking a break from all cynicsm and trying out some crazy self-improvement experiments (so you don't have to.)
