If you're reading this, we've made it to Maine and have entered the "rest hard" portion of our trip. We front-loaded the site-seeing and saved the backend for agendaless slow. Which means I'm currently probably asleep in a hammock and contemplating if I can possibly write it off my taxes as "research". ;)
Alright, habit time.
You can optimize everything else...but if you're not sleeping, you're building on sand.
This is week three of the Habit Quick Win Summer Series. One micro-habit, the science, a mindset script, and a journal prompt. Let's get into it.
✦ YOUR QUICK WIN THIS WEEK
Pick one consistent wake time and hold it this week — even on the weekend. Just the wake time. Not your bedtime, not your whole routine. One anchor.
That single habit resets your circadian rhythm faster than almost anything else. Your body will start doing the rest. :)
🔬 WHY IT ACTUALLY MATTERS
Sleep is when your brain runs its glymphatic system, a literal waste-clearance process that flushes out the toxic byproducts of a day of thinking. Poor sleep doesn't just make you tired. It impairs glucose metabolism, spikes cortisol, and suppresses the prefrontal cortex... the part of your brain responsible for willpower, decision-making, and emotional regulation.
Sleep isn't the reward for a productive day. It's the foundation that makes one possible. Note: if you are in a sleepless-super-young-kid season, this will either feel triggering or COMPLETELY justifying. Either way, i'm so sorry. I see you. I was you. (You WILL HAVE CONSISTENT SLEEP AGAIN SOMEDAY I PROMISE!)
💬 YOUR MINDSET SCRIPT
"Sleep isn't downtime. It's when my body does its most important work. Protecting my sleep is one of the highest-leverage decisions I make all day."
Read this and pretend you believe. ;)
📓 BONUS: JOURNAL PROMPT
What is the first thing you do when you wake up? Is it something that serves you — or something that immediately pulls you into everyone else's agenda? What would one small morning moment that's just yours look like?
That's your Monday. Pick a wake time. Set your alarm. Hold it. Future You is going to be so well-rested.
xoxo,
Katie Day, your habit hype girl

P.S. Still exploring New England! Following along on instagram stories if you want to see if we can pull it off with four kids. (If I haven't had a lobster roll by now, something has gone terribly wrong.) @ohkatieday
I have never been to Maine before, but I've been obsessed with the idea of it ever since reading Sarah Plain and Tall as a kid. Next week, we'll be back home and I'll include a full trip recap!
